The Team That Still Brings Their Mugs to Every Call

They'd been working together for 2 to 3 years, mostly through screens. Lots of calls. Lots of little boxes with faces in them. Not a lot of real time in the same room.

So their event planner reached out and asked if I could bring pottery painting to their Sales & Education Summit in Las Vegas.

I showed up with everything. Tables covered. Paint lined up. A piece waiting at every seat.

At first, a few people hung back. "I'm not creative." I hear that at almost every corporate event. So I walked them through it, step by step, and pretty soon nobody was hanging back anymore.

Then the table started talking. Leaders learned things about their team they'd never heard on a call. Where they grew up. Their families. What they love to do outside of work.

Most of them surprised themselves, too. They found out that scraping a design into the glaze looks amazing. And the Disney lovers at the table? They painted their very own Minnie Mouse cups.

I took every piece home, glazed it, and kiln-fired it. Then the finished mugs shipped out to every person on the team.

Here's my favorite part. Months later, I heard this:

"The pottery pieces were a huge hit. People still bring their mugs to team calls."

Think about that. Every call, someone lifts a mug they painted with the people on their screen. It's a small thing. It's also the whole point.

Team building doesn't have to mean trust falls or another catered lunch. Sometimes it's just giving people a reason to sit side by side, put the phones down, and make something together.
